Bishop Barry Officiates; Large Crowd


The following Jacksonville Journal article was published on March 5, 1923


A large crowd attended the ceremonies Sunday afternoon of the laying of the cornerstone of the new church of the Holy Rosary performed by the the RT. Rev. Patrick Barry. Assisting him were Knights of Columbus council number 648 and Bishop Kinney council of South Jacksonville, Troops 5 and 28. Boy scouts of America, were out for the ceremonies.

The ceremony performed by Bishop Barry consisted of blessing the cornerstone, sealing the box, laying the stone, which was done with the assistance of a mason. The site of the main altar, each corner, and all the foundations were blessed, and the choir, singing hymns and intoning the Psalms.

At the conclusion, Bishop Barry gave the episcopal blessing. The choir of the Holy Rosary Church was assisted by the choir of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and the music was well rendered. Mrs. James Moran, organist, Mrs. J.P. Schtenkel, Mrs. M.T. Murphy, Mrs. Charles Smith, Mrs. W.H. Marzyek, Mrs. I. M. Register, Mrs. J McManus, Mrs. Mickler, Mrs. J.A. de Caradeue, Miss McManus, Miss Yonke, Miss Margaret Smith, P.J. Lamoyeux, W.H. Stephens, Russell Morris, Mr. Counts, J.C. Morton, violinist: J. A. de Caradeue, J.c. McMullan.

The new church, which will be dedicated about August 15th, will cost approximately $80,000. The pastor, D. J. Lions, was appointed pastor of the new parish of the Holy Rosary in October 1921.
